RPS Seeks Community Input For Facilities Plan

Roseburg Public Schools is seeking community input as the district works to update its long-range facility plan.

This short survey will allow staff and other community members to provide valuable feedback about our facilities and how we can better plan for the future. Our goal as a district is to constantly work toward improving our schools and buildings with the greater mission of increasing student achievement and ensuring student safety and security.

The survey will be open until May 20th. To access the survey, click HERE.

In addition, there will be an opportunity for input at a public meeting the evening of May 21.

Roseburg School Board Selects Jared P. Cordon As The Next Superintendent

The Roseburg School District Board of Directors has selected Jared P. Cordon as its next Superintendent effective July 1, 2019. The School Board and Mr. Cordon are currently working on the terms of a tentative agreement, which will be finalized at a future School Board public meeting.

“The Roseburg School District Board of Directors were pleased with the quality of applicants who sought to join our team as the next Superintendent of the Roseburg School District,” Board Chair Joe Garcia said. “The Board conducted initial interviews on March 20 and moved three candidates forward for a second interview on April 4. The three finalists spent April 4 touring our District and meeting our staff and a number of members from the community. After the conclusion of our second round of interviews with the finalists, the Board deliberated while considering reference checks and staff and community feedback. Ultimately, Mr. Cordon emerged as the right fit to be our next Superintendent and the right choice to assist the Board and staff in meeting our goals for kids. The Board is working to quickly finalize our contractual agreement with Mr. Cordon. We look forward to welcoming Mr. Cordon and his family to our community.”

Since 2016, Jared Cordon has served as the Administrator for Elementary Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment in the Beaverton School District supporting 34 elementary schools, 17,550 students and over 1,000 teachers in all content areas. Before moving into the District Office he was an elementary school principal at two different schools in Beaverton since 2007 and a high school vice principal for three years. He was an ESL teacher in the Corvallis School District for three years and a Spanish Instructor at Oregon State University and Chemeketa CC. For two years he taught English in Monterrey, Mexico. He is still a Courtesy Faculty Member in the College of Education at OSU. Cordon has a Master of Arts in Teaching from Oregon State University and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science also from OSU. His administrative licensure coursework was completed at the University of Oregon.

When asked about his philosophy for education, Cordon said, “I believe that schools exist not just to teach skills, but to teach students to think for themselves. Every day we get to work with our future leaders, our future problem-solvers, and our greatest hope.” He continued, “Great schools have a clear vision of teaching and learning and try to give individuals leeway to creatively arrive at the destination. I am confident that working together with the staff, students, parents, community and the School Board here in Roseburg, we can build trust, increase coherency and forge partnerships that deepen confidence and enhance trust among the entire school community. My family and I are excited for the opportunity and the privilege of joining the Roseburg community.”

District Plans Hazardous Tree Removal At Fir Grove

March 14, 2019 – In order to ensure the safety of students, staff and community members, Roseburg Public Schools plans to thin several trees on the Fir Grove Elementary campus that have become a hazard.

About six of the fir trees on campus have begun to show signs of wasting, and several more were damaged in last month’s snowstorm. The district has taped off the areas around the trees to block access. The sidewalk that is used as an approach to the school from Harvard Avenue is not in the area of concern so it will continue to be accessible. The play areas under the trees will be closed until the hazards are removed.

Professional tree service operators will be employed in the near future to remove the wasting trees and to prune hazard branches and weak tops on other trees as needed.

“Our goal is to make the little stand of trees we call Fir Grove safer and healthier, so that children can continue to enjoy the little forest as generations before them have, for a long time into the future,” Superintendent Lee Paterson said.

Emergency Closure Notice

REMINDER TO UPDATE TELEPHONE NUMBERS TO RECEIVE “ONE CALL NOW” MESSAGES

The arrival of fall reminds us that in a few months inclement weather or dangerous road conditions might cause us to need to use our One-Call Now telephone system for contacting parents.  With One Call Now we can contact parents personally and relatively quickly when school must be delayed or closed because of weather conditions (or for any other important announcement).  Parents who wish to receive One Call Now messages will want to alert their student’s school of any changes to their home or cell phone numbers.

Information about school delays or closures will still be available through local television and radio media, as well as on our district website (www.roseburg.k12.or.us) under the quick link titled Emergency Info. Decisions about school delays or cancellations because of inclement weather are made by 5:30 a.m. each morning when weather or road conditions are an issue.  However, signing up to be a part of the One Call Now telephone system is the best way to ensure you receive information every time we need to get an important message to you immediately.  Please don’t hesitate to contact your school’s principal or Roseburg Public Schools at (541)440-4014 if you have any questions.

Also, if Roseburg Public Schools must be delayed on a Wednesday, the regular weekly early release schedule will remain in place and students will be released at the regular early release time.
